BIOGRAPHY
Mary G. Roebling was the first woman to serve as President and Board
Chairman of a major American banking institution.
Her principal professional
activities today involve affiliations with two banks. She is Chairman of the
Board of The National State Bank, Elizabeth, N.J.: and she is Chairman of the
Board of the Women's Bank, N.A., Denver, Colorado. The two institutions are in
no way connected.
In 1937, she was elected President of
Trenton Trust Company, and from 1937 to 1972 served as President and/or
Chairman. In 1972, Trenton Trust Company was merged into The National State Bank
and Mrs. Roebling was elected Board Chairman of the combined institutions.
She helped establish the Denver bank in
1978. It was the Nation's first nationally chartered bank established by women;
and Mrs. Roebling was elected that year to head the Board of the new
institution.
Mrs. Roebling was born in West
Collingswood, N. J. Her father was Isaac Dare Gindhart, Jr., a retired telephone
company executive who served on the Board and the Executive Committee of Trenton
Trust Company. Her mother was Mary W. (Simon) Gindhart, noted as a pianist and
for her musical activities.
Mrs. Roebling attended the public
schools of Southern New Jersey and continued advance studies in economics and
finance at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School and New York
University.
A widow, Mrs. Roebling has two
children. Her daughter, Mrs. David J. Hobin, is the mother of four children and
lives in Titusville, N. J., and Palm Beach, Fla. Her son, Paul, has achieved
note as an actor on both the Broadway stage and in television. He is married to
the former Olga Bellin, who also is in the theatre. They have one child, a son,
Kristian.
Mrs. Roebling maintains residences in
Trenton, Denver and New York.
Other business affiliations include Boards of Directors of Companion Life
Insurance, Mutual of Omaha: the Tattersall Company and the Board of Trustees of
